Open Transport is not supported by many routers these days so connecting a real Mac running OS 7 to an ethernet routher may not work so using it thru an emulator is fine.

In Classic Mac OS, the software used to connect to a tcp/ip network was called Open Transport. Your host Mac is acting as the DHCP server for Basilisk and is giving it the IP address. Using any one of the internet browsers people here have already suggested, you will be able to go online yet your web experience will be a challange at best as others have noted.

Now boot the emulated Mac running Mac OS 7.5.5 and choose TCP/IP from control panels menu and switch the connection to Ethernet from the pull down menu. In Basilisk under the Serial/Network tab, pull down the menu in "Ethernet Interface" and select "Slirp" that is the emulated ethernet card for Basilisk. Since you are using Basilisk you'll get your IP address from your Host machine. All the trouble and expense you will go thru to achieve internet capability for that old OS is a challenge. If the computer does not have a phoneline connection, you will need a 56K modem between the computer and the phone jack. However, System 7 will do dialup, you will have to go to someone like AOL to get dialup service (monthly charge) and then you can connect to the internet using PPP and your telephone line (not your cell phone). If there is no ethernet on your System 7 machine, as suggested by other posts, the choice you do select (PPP or Appletalk) ultimately will require you to go thru a conversion to end up with an ethernet output to connect to a DSL modem, I don't believe System 7 computers have wireless capabilities compatible with todays modems. Also, go to "TCP" to select ethernet for the connection. In the Control panel, under the Apple menu, select "internet" and set up the info for your email account. While the web browsing will not work properly with todays web designs, the email part in text mode will work satisfactory. For example, Classic works okay to run Wordperfect but may not work when you want to run a game which really wants to take control of the video functions which are still being controlled by OSX. After all, if you are running a much newer computer then why would you even want to browse the web with System 7 software?Įmulators can really be limited when it comes to dealing with specific hardware functions. If there are System 7 extensions that really require actual hardware then those might well not work with software just pretending to be a piece of hardware.
